Coding & Auditing Manager

Universal Coding Solutions (UCS) is a growing consulting firm serving clients in the healthcare industry.  Our clients include medical practices, hospitals and related organizations.  UCS Consultants use their expertise to provide clients with customized analyses and solutions to address organizational challenges and opportunities.

The Coding Manager position will work side-by-side with other UCS team members to provide consultations to our clients in one or more of the following areas:  revenue cycle, auditing, clinical documentation, coding education and performance improvement.

Basic Function:

The Coding Manager has significant responsibility for project management, client management, and the continuous development of UCS’s coding and auditing service line.  This role is responsible for working with clients to provide auditing services, education and support.  The Coding Manager is also responsible for providing direction and support to other Coder(s) while managing productivity, communication and timelines.

The Coding Manager stays current with changes in established government coding guidelines, third party reimbursement policies, regulations, PQRS and Meaningful Use.

Travel may be required from time to time for Client visits and conference

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience with coding and auditing
  • A minimum of 2 years’experience in a supervisor role
  • Specialized focus in ICD-10, CPT/HCPCS coding

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing required, Master’s preferred
  • RN, LPN, or other advanced level clinical training required

CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current RHIA, CCS, or RHIT required and ability to maintain coding credentials

SKILLS

  • Working knowledge of coding, documentation review and audit terminology as well as general medical and industry terminology
  • Knowledge of Medicare and other insurance carrier’s coding and compliance guidelines
  • Ability to comprehend and apply applicable healthcare regulations
  • Good interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Strong ability to manage and develop others
  • Proficient in PC and MS Office skills, particularly Word and Excel

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides direction, mentoring and support of the Professional Coder’s daily functions
  • Performs inpatient, outpatient and surgical record audits to validate appropriate diagnoses and procedures based on coding guidelines and insurance regulations
  • Abides by AHIMA standards of Ethical Coding when performing validation reviews and provide feedback of any potential compliance issues related to coding and provider documentation
  • Applies and adheres to correct coding principles, LCD coverage determinations, currently accepted compliance standards and all legal, federal and insurance regulations
  • Assigns and sequences ICD10/CPT/HCPCS codes to diagnoses and procedures according to established guidelines
  • Consults with client organizations as necessary to perform coding and audit services
  • Utilizes official coding guidelines and resources as required including CMS directives, bulletins and payer guidelines to maintain knowledge of current requirements
  • Conducts necessary research to address complex coding related challenges
  • Researches complex coding issues for clients
  • Possesses knowledge of PQRS requirements, provides guidance to providers on identifying reporting measures and works with internal staff to ensure data capturing
  • Ability to independently prepare regular reports, presentations, and graphics
  • Continuously builds competencies through professional development opportunities
  • Contributes to publications, presentations and white papers on behalf of organization as requested
  • Trains and develops other Coder(s) and Auditor(s)
  • Partners and collaborate within team and across service lines on associated projects and sales-related activities
  • Responsible for timely and accurately accounting of hours (billable and non-billable) in time and attendance software for proper billing of services rendered
  • Other duties as assigned and/or as needed
